3D’s Chianti Classico Riserva – now a Gran Selezione - March 2015

Our splendid Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG from Rocca delle Macìe has been promoted into a new Chianti Classico category called Gran Selezione DOCG.

The Chianti Consorzio (governing body) during 2013 decided to introduce a new ‘top of the tree’ category.

This is what they said, ‘During the course of 2013, in order to allow the many truly excellent wines produced under the Black Rooster symbol, to be properly presented and to give them a specific place as an appellation category, the Chianti Classico Producers’ Assembly ratified a series of changes in the appellation rules which have fundamentally modified Chianti Classico as an appellation. One of the most important modifications approved by the Assembly was the creation of a new category called Gran Selezione positioned at the top of the quality pyramid.

To be a Gran Selezione, the wine must be made entirely from grapes grown on the estate. It must have been aged for a minimum of 30 months in both barrel and bottle. And it must undergo stricter technical and sensory parameters. In effect, only wines that have a special connection with their terroir will be approved. This year, we are offering the ‘Super Tuscan’ Riserva di Fizzano 2011 under the new Gran Selezione label. It is a blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot. It has been aged for a year in a mix of French oak and then aged in bottle. It is as impressive as the previous vintage which many Partners have enjoyed during 2014.
