Welcome to the ‘land of the long white cloud’.

There are many images that come to mind when one thinks of New Zealand.  A beautiful, clean, green land perhaps, where sheep outnumber the population 20:1.  A country of magnificent scenery, lush forests, amazing wildlife and a pleasant climate.  Friendly and open people who enjoy an informal outdoor lifestyle.  A unique and dynamic culture, with European, Maori, Pacific and Asian influences.  Fantastic food and wine.  The list is seemingly endless – and rather enticing.

Kahurangi Estate is based in Nelson on the beautiful northwestern coast of the South Island – some two hours drive from Marlborough.  It was established in the 1970s but was purchased by Greg and Amanda Day in 1998.  They changed the name to Kahurangi, meaning ‘treasured possession’ in Maori, and set about investing a great deal of time, energy and money into making it one of the most respected boutique wineries in the region.

Today, it occupies just over 12 hectares and Greg is proud of the fact that some of his vines are the oldest in New Zealand.  It remains quite small however and has an informal, family atmosphere that sits well with 3D philosophy.

The region of Nelson offers idyllic landscapes of lakes, rivers, mountains and national parks. It also has a wonderfully vibrant, bohemian culture and lifestyle too.  It enjoys more sunshine hours than any other region in New Zealand and offers the perfect climate and mix of soils to satisfy the many boutique wineries now established there.

In keeping with the clean, green image that New Zealand enjoys, Greg is working hard at becoming fully organic – what the Kiwis call ‘sustainable status’.  He now uses sheep (what else?) to roam amongst the vines in winter to help keep the grass short and to provide a natural fertiliser.  He no longer uses herbicides and chemicals, which is a real benefit to both the drinker and the environment.  The wines are very well made and offer incredibly attractive drinking.

Partners in Kahurangi will automatically receive an invitation to our New Zealand wine tastings and dinner in the UK hosted by 3D – Greg and Amanda will also join us on alternative years.  This will be a great opportunity to sample the latest vintages from your vineyard amongst like-minded people – a small slice of New Zealand brought to you!
